Dolly Parton’s Masterclass in Authenticity and Grace

Dolly Parton being interviewed by Barbara Walters

You Don’t Need a Dramatic Story. You Need an Authentic One.

Hello Reader,

I didn’t realize I would cry when Dolly Parton died.

But here I am.

I recently watched an old interview between Dolly and Barbara Walters, and it reminded me what an amazing, graceful woman Dolly was.

Barbara asks pointed questions about Dolly’s appearance, her upbringing and whether people might see her as a joke.

Dolly never becomes defensive. (Gosh, I love that woman.)

She doesn’t shrink. She doesn’t posture. She doesn’t try to become someone else to win Barbara’s approval.

She simply answers with warmth, humor, vulnerability and remarkable self-possession.

It is a masterclass in knowing who you are.

Dolly famously said:

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”

That’s what I eventually did in my own life. It took me a while, and it was a lot of work to understand the experiences that shaped me, what I had learned from them and why they mattered.

That’s a big part of what I help my clients do now.

One of the most powerful ways to “do who you are on purpose” is to become clear about your origin story.

Your origin story doesn’t need to be dramatic.

In this interview, Dolly’s story is relatively simple: She grew up poor in a large family in rural Tennessee. She loved where she came from. She knew how others might judge her—and she refused to be ashamed of any of it.

Her story is authentic. It’s vulnerable. It’s insightful.

And it’s utterly touching.

That is what gives an origin story its power. The point isn’t to impress people with what happened to you. The point is to help them understand what'S inside you:

  • What shaped you?
  • What did it teach you?
  • How does that lesson influence the way you lead, communicate or serve today?

When you can answer those questions clearly, your story does more than establish your credentials.

It establishes your Emotional Credibility™.

People begin to understand not only what you do, but why you care. That is where trust and genuine human connection begin.

[It's a long video (10 min.), but even if you just watch the first few minutes, you'll love it and learn something. Amazingly touching!]

Watch Dolly Parton’s remarkable interview here.

As you watch, notice how completely herself she is. She doesn’t merely tell us who she is. She is being who she is.

She does it on purpose.

Dolly had an extraordinary ability to transcend boundaries, bring people together, bring out the best in people and speak to the best in people.

We need more like her.

And perhaps the best way to honor that part of her legacy is to ask ourselves:

Who am I? And how can I be more fully that person, on purpose?

If you, or someone you know, is ready to uncover and tell an origin story that creates real connection, I’d love to help. Just reply to this email and tell me a little about what you’re working on.

Much love,

John

Building the Long Game — From Pandemic Food Relief to NomadAI + “Universe” (LinkedIn for Gen Z) with Camden Francis

Today I sit down with Camden Francis—a 21-year-old founder in the Boston area who’s already lived a few lifetimes worth of leadership reps.

We talk about the real story behind the highlight reel: how Camden co-founded a pandemic-era food distribution charity that moved $100,000 worth of food and resources, how that experience became a launchpad into the startup world, and why his newest projects—NomadAI (AI-assisted travel planning) and Universe (a career/network platform “for Gen Z,” currently under wraps)—are rooted in something deeper than ambition: service, meaning, and the long game.

A big thread in this conversation is something I care about a lot: your origin story—not as marketing, but as emotional credibility. Who you are. What shaped you. What you’ve survived. What you’re here to build—and why people should trust you enough to follow.

For interviews or business inquiries, Camden Francis invites you to connect with him at info@camdenfrancis.com. Embrace the opportunity to engage with a young luminary whose charisma, innovation, and commitment to positive change define his journey.
